A 3D printed upholstery
The development of digital 3D printing allowed us to develop a new saddle without the restrictions or limitations imposed by traditional production methods and materials. The adaptive saddle padding is manufactured by Carbon using its revolutionary Digital Light Synthesis technology. DLS is an additive manufacturing process that uses digital ultraviolet light projection, oxygen permeable optics and programmable liquid resins to produce parts with excellent mechanical properties, resolution and surface finish.
CUSTOMIZED ZONAL CUSHIONS
Using carbon technology, biomechanists and engineers have an unprecedented opportunity: to design and manufacture multiple functional areas within the saddle, each of them separately tuned to specific mechanical properties. Each of these key functional areas is equipped with distinctive cushioning and mechanical behavior together progressively and seamlessly in the same padding.
LAB TESTED, ROAD PROVEN
Professional cyclists and amateur riders were tested both in the Fizik laboratories and on the road. During each phase of development, each iteration was carefully tested. A large emphasis was placed on understanding how pressure patterns change depending on bike geometry, riding position and riding style.
FROM AN IDEA DIRECTLY TO SCALABLE PRODUCTION
This unique combination of process and material has given us the ability to develop a product five times faster and create and test hundreds of iterations in the field. This technology is applicable to mass production and fully replicates the traditional manufacturing process. It accelerates and jumps over all intermediate phases.
